Biking

Armstrong Trails currently has 35.5-miles of trail, including one share-the-road section (Phillipston), available for cyclists to enjoy.  Trailheads at Rosston, Ford City, Kittanning, Cowanshannock Creek, Templeton, Rimer, Redbank, Phillipston, East Brady and Sarah Furnace give easy access to hours of cycling enjoyment.  CLICK HERE for listing of designated parking areas.

Hiking

Whether you hike a mile or 35.5-miles (closed is the 1/2-mile Brady Tunnel which separates the southern 31-miles from the northern 4.5-miles DO NOT ENTER) along Armstrong Trails there are plenty of opportunities to explore our beautiful countryside.  Signs of days gone by – river travel (Grays Eddy), iron ore production (Monticello Furnace, Redbank), railroad travel (Coaling Tower at Redbank, Brady Tunnel (closed), Phillipston (rail yard & turntable) can be found.  The sides of the trail are alive with beautiful wildflowers. Especially worth the trip are the spring wildflowers throughout the corridor.  Leashed fur friends are welcome…please pick up after your pet.

Birding

From turkeys and scarlet finches to majestic bald eagles. Armstrong Trails provides the opportunity to see and study dozens of native bird species. Keep an eye to the sky for the privilege of seeing an eagle. Winter is the perfect time of year, without them hiding in the foliage.

Geocaching

Geocaching is the world’s largest treasure hunting game.  Founded in 2000, geocaching is dedicated to inspiring and enabling discovery, exploration, and adventure through a unique combination of outdoor recreation and location-based technology.  The games passionate community of millions of players use the Geocaching app and GPS-enable devices to find cleverly hidden containers called geocaches.  Today, there are more than 3 million geocaches in over 190 countries including many along Armstrong Trails.  For more information visit www.geocaching.com.

Fishing

Trail users may fish from the Rosston parking area MP 39, Cowanshannock Creek/Bernie Snyder Picnic Area MP 47.5 PA Fish & Boat Commission, Templeton parking area MP 53.7, PA Fish & Boat Commission. A valid fishing license is required and must be displayed at all. Times by those who are fishing.  CAUTION:  Most of Armstrong Trails runs through private property and trespassers may be prosecuted by landowners.

Boat Launches

The Allegheny River can be accessed by boats, canoes, kayaks and other watercraft from designated locations along Armstrong Trails.  PA Fish & Boat Commission Launches are Rosston MP 39, Cowanshannock Creek MP 47.5, Templeton MP 53.7 and East Brady Park MP 68.  Note: there is not public access in Phillipston MP 66, private property, please do not trespass.

Camping

To camp along the trail, permission must be received, in advance.  Camping is only permitted is designated areas. Download form here.  Private campgrounds can be found in Trail Amenities under Lodging.  CAUTION: Most of  Armstrong Trails runs through private property and trespassers may be prosecuted by landowners.

Cross Country Skiing

When the weather outside is frightful, cross country skiing along the trail can be delightful!  The trail has very little slope and is easy to navigate.  Ski at your own risk.
